A Textual Research of the Daoist Palaces and Temples in Linan in the Southern Song Dynasty and Hangzhou in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Abstract

The geographic distribution,quantity,approval procedure,capital source of construction and repair of Daoist palaces and temples,as well as other related aspects,are important departure points to study Daoist history.This paper firstly inspects the 13 biggest Daoist Palaces and other important Daoist temples,Daoist halls in Linan in Southern Song Dynasty and discusses three kinds of capital sources for creation and repair of Daoist palaces.Secondly,the inspection focuses on Daoist palaces and temples of Hangzhou during Yuan and Ming dynasties——some newly built Daoist temples were bigger in size and many of them even offered sacrifices to folk gods.And thirdly,the paper discusses Daoist palaces and temples in Qing Dynasty in Hangzhou,which were small in size and less influential.The Ten Sceneries of Wu Hill in Hangzhou were almost showplaces of Daoist temples.
