Efficacy of combined metformin-letrozole in comparison with letrozole alone in infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of combined metformin-letrozole in comparison with letrozole alone in infertile women with polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS).Method Infertile women with PCOS were randomly divided into metformin-letrozole group(n=19) and letrozole group(n=20).After an initial 6-8 weeks' treatment of metformin in metformin-letrozole group,followed by letrozole(5 mg) from day 3-7 of menstrual cycle.Letrozole group received letrozole treatment alone.After 3 menstrual cycles,pregnancy rates were compared between the two groups.Results The pregnancy rate in metformin-letrozole group was significantly higher than letrozole group(47.04% vs 15%,P=0.029).Conclusion In PCOS patients,the combination of letrozole and metformin leads to higher pregnancies.
