Decomposition of driving forces behind carbon emission change during economic development in Xinjiang

Abstract

Based on time series decomposition of the Log-Mean Divisia Index(LMDI),we analyzed the change of carbon emissions from 8 economic sectors and households in Xinjiang from 1994 to 2007.The decomposition methods cover 4 categories of energy products and relate to 9 driving factors.Empirical results showed that rapid economic growth and decreasing energy efficiency have greatly increased carbon emission from economic sectors,and manufacturing and electric power,gas and water producing are the two main resources of carbon emission.As for households,2-digit growth rate of population in Xinjiang is a consistent upward driving force for carbon emission,whereas recent change in carbon emission is largely attributed by energy consumption per capita.However,energy comsumption shift in residential consumption doesn't reduce the carbon emission.In the end,some policy and suggestions can be deduced to cut the carbon emission while keeping the economic development in Xinjiang.
