Abstract

Objective The therapeutic outcome of reflux esophagitis using omeprazole and cisapride was contrasted .Methods Patients with reflux esophagitis diagnosed by endoscopy were randomly divided to receive omeprazole (n=36), 20 mg qd and cisapride (n=36), 10 mg tid, for 4 weeks. Clinical symptoms as heartburn, chestpain, acid reflux, belching, endoscopic findings and 24h intraesophageal acidities were taken as criteria for comparison. Results Two weeks after treatment with omeprazole and cisapride the clinical improvement rates attained 72.2 and 52.8 per cent (P0.05 ) respectively . That rose to 83.3 and 77.8 per cent by the end of 4 weeks (P 0.05 ) . Meanwhile the rates of endoscopic amelioration approached 91.7 and 86.1 per cent respectively (P0.05) ; intraluminal pH turned for the better in parallel (P0.05 ) , but with omeprazole greater improvements were noticed in terms of the latter two criteria than with cisapride (P 0.05 ) for esophagitis over grade II.Conclusion Omeprazole and cisapride are both effective for reflux esophagitis , but omeprazole being more potent than cisapride in this study for cases with esophagitis of graded II and over.
