Comparative study between venlafaxine and sertraline in treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy and safety of venlafaxine and sertraline in the treatment of depression. Method:Seven-six patients with depression were randomly divided into venlafaxine group or sertraline group and then received treatments for 6 weeks.The efficacy was assessed using Hamilton rating scale for depression(HAMD) and treatment emergent symptom scale(TESS). Results:The venlafaxine group showed treatment effect at week 1.There were no significant differences in the efficacy and HAMD scores between two groups at the treatment end.The side effects of both groups were few and slight. Conclusion: Venlafaxine and sertraline are both effective in the treatment of depressive episode.Venlafaxine have earlier response.
