Abstract

The acoustic performance of multi-inlet multi-outlet reactive muffler is investigated by using three-dimensional analytical technique and finite element method. The effects of the relative angle, offset and number of inlet and outlet tubes as well as the structural parameter of perforated tube on the acoustic behavior of muffler is explored. The results show that the relative angle and offset of inlet and outlet tubes have certain influence on the acoustic characteristic of muffler. Sound attenuation in low and medium frequencies can be increased by adding tail tube expander and internal insertion tube. Muffler with perforated tube and multiple expansion chambers shows better performance in medium and high frequencies. Finally it is concluded that the muffler with multi-inlet and multioutlet has better behavior in both acoustic and resistance performances.
