Abstract

The view that language is arbitrary has been deeply rooted in the linguistics field since the 20 th century. However, language is not absolutely arbitrary because there is a lot of iconicity existing in language. Language iconicity refers to the phenomenon in which language symbols share a lot of similarity with what they represent in the aspects of phone, graph and structure. Translation iconicity refers to the phenomenon in which the target language shares a lot of similarity with the source language in the aspects of phone, graph, syntactic structure and text. English euphemism is a kind of linguistic as well as cognitive phenomenon. Research on the translation of English euphemism from the perspectives of sequencing iconicity, quantitative iconicity, and distance iconicity, can promote people's understanding of English euphemism in the fields of cognitive and translation research.
