Evaluation of fluorescent staining and Ziehl-Neelsen for direct detection of mycobacterium tuberculosis in clinical specimens

Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the clinical value in fluorescent staining for detecting acid-fast bacilli.Methods: A total of 330 sputum specimens were processed by fluorescent staining and Ziehl-Neelsen methods,then the difference for sputum sensitivity and positive grade-standard of acis-fast bacillus detections by fluorescent staining was compared with that of Ziehl-Neelsen staining.Results: The fluorescent stainig took less difference than Ziehl-Neelsen staining with the sensitivity was 21.3% and 21.6%,respectively.Positive grade-standard for acis-fast bacillus detections show significant difference in grade of 1-9 piece /50 Hp(fluorescent staining) and that of 1-8 piece of 300 Hp(Ziehl-Neelsen staining) with the sensitivity was 2.2% and 9.6%,respectively.The other grade-standard show no difference.Conclusion: The fluorescence staining is more suitable the clinical application.
