Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of duodenal-jejunal bypass(DJB) on glucose metabolism in non-obese Goto-Kakizaki(GK) type 2 diabetic rats. Methods Eighteen male GK rats and eighteen male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups of GK operation(group A),GK sham operation(group B),Wistar operation(group C) and Wistar sham operation(group D) with 9 rats each. The body weight, food intake, fasting blood glucose were measured before and on the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th and 8th week after operation.Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) was performed before and on the 8th week after operation. The area under blood glucose concentration curve(AUC) was calculated. Results The fasting blood glucose of group A decreased from preoperative(8.7±1.3) mmol/L to(5.9±0.6) mmol/L on the 8th week after operation(P0.05),while the fasting blood glucose of group B had no significant changes. The glucose tolerance was strikingly improved as demonstrated by a 20.6% reduction of the AUC in group A(P0.05).Conclusion DJB can directly improve glucose metabolism in non-obese type 2 diabetic rats, independent of effects on food intake and body weight. The operation has no hypoglycemic effect on normal blood glucose.
