Abstract

Objective To identify the relationship of plasma homocysleine and serum folic acid in patients with adenomatous polyps of colon and rectum. Methods Forty-two patients with adenomatous polyps of colon and rectum and 46 healthy controls were studied.Plasma homocysteine and serum folic acid levels were determined in blood samples. Results In patients with adenomatous polyps of colon and rectum,the plasma level of homocysleine was significantly higher than that in the heanlthy controls(15.04 μmol/L ±4.80 μmol/L vs 8.23 μmol/L ±3.70 μmol/L,P0.001),and the serum level of folic acid was markedly lower than that in the healthy controls(4.46 ng/mL±3.63 ng/mL vs 13.65 ng/mL ±4.86 ng/mL,P0.001). Conclusion Adenomatous polyps of colon and rectum may be correlated with increased plasma homocysteine and decreased serum folic acid levels.Increased plasma homocysteine and decreased serum folic acid levels may be the risk factors for adenomatous polyps of colon and rectum.
