Abstract
Objective:To study the effect of probucal on regression and stabilization of atherosclerotic plaque, and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP1) and its tissue inhibitor(TIMP1). Methods:Twenty five rabbits were induced to develop atherosclerosis by cholesterol feeding and then treated with probucal for 12 weeks. Pathology and immunohistochemistry staining were employed in the study. The mRNA level of collagen 1, MMP1, and TIMP1 were analysed by RT PCR.Results:Probucal could reduce blood lipids and regress atherosclerotic plaque significantly. The mRNA level of collagen 1,MMP1 and TIMP1 were decreased in probucal group. Conclusion:Probucal can regress atherosclerotic plaque of the rabbits and can also stabilize the plaque by reducing the expression of MMP1 and MMP1/TIMP1.
