Abstract

Phospholipid fatty acid analysis(PLFA) is a recently developed technology for the study of microbial ecology. The principle of PLFA is the compositions and contents of phospholipid fatty acids in cells are relatively stable. The information about the biomass and microbial community structure could be acquired through extraction and analysis the phospholipid fatty acid in environmental samples.PLFA has been widely used in the microbial ecology studies of soil, water and plant root. This paper reviews applications of PLFA in the microbial ecology studies of lake sediment. In addition, the drawbacks and applicable perspectives of PLFA are also summarized.
