Abstract
Photonic crystals are synthetic crystals.They are made of two or more kinds of dielectric materials arranged in 1-D,2-D or 3-D period structures of light wavelength scale.Since the photonic crystals have the properties of photonic band gaps and photonic localization,they will have a bright application prospect in the future.The basic characteristics of photonic crystals are presented and the self-assembling methods of 3-D photonic crystals are reviewed mainly.
