The Controversies in Han Dynasty over Qu Yuan's Suicide and Personality

Qu Yuan is a great poet and patriot in Chinese history and the establishment of such a statue has greatly related to the controversies in Han Dynasty over his rhapsodies.This article mainly discusses the controversies in Han Dynasty over his suicide and personality from three aspects: the viewpoints of scholars' in Han Dynasty over his suicide and personality;the reasons that why those scholars had such viewpoints;and finally the historical significance of the controversies among the scholars.In the first part,the author of this article has mainly discussed the viewpoints of Jia Yi,Si-ma Qian,Yang Xiong,Ban Gu and Wang Yu.And in the second part the author has probed into the problem from three points: the social context of the scholars,the thoughts that the scholars were pursuing and the life experience of Qu Yuan himself.As for the historical significance,the author thinks that Qu Yuan had become a historic figure and a model patriot just because of the controversies and thus established an example for scholars in his time to follow.
