Abstract

The ultrastructural changes of microspore mother cells and tapetal cells in anthers during the abortion of male sterile cotton Kang A were observed by comparing with its maintainer Kang B and by using transmission electron microscopy. The result of observation showed that there were many abnormal mitochondria and vacuoles in sporogenous cells, microspore mother cells and tepetal cells in sterile anthers during their development, especially at the meiosis stage of microspore mother cells. These abnormal mitochondria and vacuoles may be associated with the death of microspore mother cell which leads to the male sterility in cotton.
