Surgical Treatment for Thoracic and Lumbar Malignant Tumors by Stage I Resection and Stability Reconstruction

Abstract

Objective To probe into methods of Stage I resection and reconstruction of spinal stability in treatment of thoracic and lumbar malignant tumors and its clinical effects.Methods Seventeen patients with thoracic and lumbar malignant tumors were admitted in our hospital from March 2002 to March 2007.Thirteen underwent vertebral lesions removal and spinal stability reconstruction through antero-posterior joint approach,and 4 did total spondylotomy and spinal stability reconstruction through posterior middle approach in Stage I.Results Low back pains were relieved or disappeared in 14 patients,and neurological function was improved in 8 after surgery.No severe complications related to surgery occurred during or after surgery,and no tumor recurrence was found in 6 patients undergoing total spondylotomy and stability reconstruction from the beginning of follow-up till now,with good fusion of installed bones and fixation stability.Conclusion Stage I resection and spinal stability reconstruction,especially total spondylotomy,is an effective method in treatment of thoracic and lumbar malignant tumors.
