Abstract

Owing to the high temperatures of the process, deleterious effects such as oxidation, decarburization, phase transformation and grain growth may occur when ceramic particles are sprayed by conventional method. Shortcomings can be avoided by cold spraying, due to the low temperatures. And the residual compressive stress enhances the fatigue resistance of coating. However, the poor plastic deformation of the ceramic particles results in low bonding strength among particles and large porosity, which affects the quality of the coating. Adding metal powder to improve the plastic performance of the composite coating is an effective path to solve these problems above. Researches on the preparations of ceramic coating and ceramic-metal composite coating are reviewed, including powder preparation, spraying parameters, microstructure, bonding mechanism, mechanical properties, electrical and chemical performance of the coating.
