Abstract
A new design model for heavy load columns, composite steel tube filled with steel-reinforced concrete is established. In this kind of steel concrete composite column, section steel is inserted into steel tube and concrete is filled into the gap between them. The test results of axially loaded high strength concrete composite columns are presented. The working mechanisms and the mechanical behaviors are studied. The effects of the mechanical properties of the composite column are discussed. The results show that this composite column has advantages of higher load carrying capacity.Based on the test results, formulas for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of the composite column are proposed. The calculating results from the formulas agree well with the experimental data and numerical results.
