Abstract

The microsporogenesis and development of male gametophyte of male flowers of Carica papayawere reported. The anther is tetrasporangiate, and the anther wall is composed of 5~6 layers, and tapetum is glandular.The cytokinesis of meiosis of the microspore mother cell is simultaneous. The arrangment of microspore in a tetrads is tetrahedral. Mature pollen grain is of the 2-celled type, being spherical. There is abortive phenomenon during the microsporogenesis and development of male gametophyte, with empty pollen grains appearing. The main reason of causing the abortive pollen grains is the postponement of tapetum's disintegration and degeneration, which affects the supply of nutrition for microspore growing up in time.
