Abstract
Objective: To study the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in spinal nerve cells after SCI in SD rats. Methods: 32 SD rats were divided at random into laminectomy and injury groups. The rats in injury group were injured in dorsal side of T 10 spinal cord by Allen's stall. The rats were sacrificed at 8 h, 1 d, 2 d, 3 d,1 w, 2 w and 3 w after surgery to sample spinal cord. Immunohistochemistry (SP) was performed to observe the distribution of VEGF in the spinal cord.Results: No VEGF immunoreactivity existed in normal spinal cords. Strong VEGF immunoreactivity was observed at 8 h after SCI. It peaked from 1 and 3 days and continued for 1 week.After 2 to 3 weeks immunoreactivity decreased significantly ( P 0.01).VEGF positive rate of large motor neurons was higher than that of other kinds of nerve cells ( P 0.01). The positive rate of glial cells in dorsal white matter was higher than those in gray matter and ventral white matter ( P 0.01). Conclusion: The expression of VEGF in nerve cells in the injured spinal area was seen in the early stage of SCI in rats.
