The Hermeneutic Implications of Yi,Xiang and Yan

Abstract
The three concepts,Yan(word),Xiang(image) and Yi(meaning),first appear in Chapter XICI of the Book of Changes with a brief discussion of their mutual relationships.An important topic of debate in the Wei and Jin metaphysics,the three concepts were reflected in three views,namely,the views that Yan can't explain Yi clearly,that when Yi is conveyed,Yan is unnecessary,and that Yan can explain Yi clearly.These views have significant position in the classical Chinese interpretation theory.It will help contribute to the establishment of Chinese own hermeneutic system if we reconsider the position and role of Yan,Xiang and Yi in the process of understanding from the comparison of Western hermeneutics and general hermeneutics.
