Electrocoagulation for varicose veins of the lower extremity

Abstract
Objective: To reduce hematoma and operative scars, a new method, electrocoagulation for varicose veins of the lower extremity, was introduced. Methods: An incision was made at the ankle. A special electrocoagulator probe was inserted from distal end to proximal end of the long saphenous vein. After the long saphenous vein and its divisions were ligated at the groin, all varicose veins and the main truck of the long saphenous vein were electrocoagulated. Results: From October 1996 to September 1999, 295 patients and their 403 sick legs were treated. The results were perfect except for the scars at the ankle and groin. The patients needed only 2 to 3 days in the hospital. Conclusion: Electrocoagulation for varicose veins of the lower extremity is simple and easy, and has the effectiveness of plastic surgery.
