Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of Probucol on the lipid Level,CRP and the development of plaque in atherosclerotic rabbits. Methods: Twenty-two male New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: ① control group(n=6):fed with a regular diet for 16 weeks;② high-cholesterol group(n=8):fed with a high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks and then with a regular diet for another 8 weeks;③ Probucol group(n=8):fed with a high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks and then with a regular diet plus Probucol for another 8 weeks.Peripheral blood was collected from the ear artery before experiment,at the 8th and 16th week before Russell's viper venom(RVV) injection, and at the 16th weeks before killing.Serum hs-CRP and TC,TG,LDL-C and HDL-C levels were measured. Results: The levels of TC,TG,LDL-C and HDL-C decreased significantly in probucol group at the 8th week, which were apparently lower than those in high-cholesterol group. After the rabbits were fed with a high-cholesterol diet for 8 weeks, the hs-CRP level in high-cholesterol group and in probucol group was obviously higher than in control group, whereas the hs-CRP level in Probucol group was significantly lower than in high-cholesterol group. Conclusion: Probucol could significantly reduce the lipid level of atherosclerotic rabbits and stabilize the plaque to a certain extent.
