Analysis of inpatient disease-category distribution in a psychiatric hospital

Objective To investigate the inpatient disease-category distribution,schizophrenia subtype,and its difference between male and female. Methods A total of 511 inpatients were enrolled by cluster sampling method in a psychiatric hospital.All the patients were diagnosed and categorized by ICD-10 criteria.Then patients with schizophrenia were subcategorized and analyzed,and difference between male and female was analyzed. Results Schizophrenia(79.1%)was the main disease category,followed by organic mental disorders(8.4%)and affective disorders(6.5%).The disease distribution was different between male and female.The ratio of mental and behavioral disorders due to alcohol(P0.05)was significantly higher in male than in female,while the ratios of affective disorders(P0.05)and neuroses(P0.01)were significantly higher in female than in male.Among schizophrenia subtype,the ratio of paranoid schizophrenia(48.0%)was the highest,followed by undifferentiated schizophrenia(41.6%),the ratio of simple schizophrenia(0.2%)was very low,and no catatonic schizophrenia was found. Conclusion The disease-category distribution of mental disorders in psychiatric hospital is different between male and female.Schizophrenia is the main disease category.Paranoid schizophrenia is the most common subtype of schizophrenia,followed by undifferentiated schizophrenia.
