Abstract

The regional distribution of novels about ghosts and gods in the Song Dynasty can be summed up according to the native places of writers of novels in classical Chinese in the Song Dynasty and the numbers of their novels. The reasons for such a regional feature are analyzed by taking regional culture into account. The first reason lies in a strong flavour of belief in witchcraft, ghosts and divination. It was believed that the ups and downs of either an individual or an ara were determined by ghosts and gods and everything could be foreknown by divination,so such beliefs were often used to guide self-life and social affairs, which directly provided rich materials for the prosperity of such novels.Another reason lies in thd interest and advocation from highest rulers to ordinary people.
