Abstract

Taking the counties of Guangxi,a periphery province as a study case,GDP per capita as the measuring indicator, this paper analyses the spatial pattern of economic disparities in Guangxi from 1997 to 2010 by use of ESDA-GIS.The results show that:①the county economy in Guangxi has started to show a strong trend of spatial autocorrelation, and developmental differences are enlarged first and dwindled afterward. The overall spatial agglomeration is in the low level.② In terms of local differences, the counties ofH-Htype are currently found mainly in the south of Guangxi, including the center of Liuzhou and Guilin;the counties ofL-Lare mainly located in the west of Guangxi, and the center of Guangxi. There exists the obvious core-periphery structure as a result of spatial interaction.③Although the overall pattern is relatively stable, the spatial distribution of counties with economic hotspots shows the trend of moving to the Beibu Gulf Economic Zone.④The spatial pattern of economic growth also shows a strong trend of spatial autocorrelation, and the spatial disparities of economic growth start to narrow owing to hotspot areas and coldspot areas switching quickly. The paper discusses further the main driving forces for economic spatial disparities in periphery province from historical development foundation, geographical location, opening and developing policies and spatial proximity effect aspects. The corresponding policy implications are also been given.
