Cognitive Analysis of Central Modals in English Scripts Based on Force Schema——A Case Study of Friends

Abstract

The present research,utilizing corpus analysis software,antconc3.2.4,firstly explores the distribution of the central modals in the scripts of Friends,discovering that the modality value and meanings of modals are tightly related to discourse types.Based on corpus analysis,the polysemy and modality value of Can and must are then analyzed by force schemas based on the root and epistemic divisions,the result of which further suggests the various degree of modality value and meanings in correlation with their functions in different discourses.
