SEDATIVE EFFECTS OF PROPOFOL AND MIDAZOLAM ON PATIENTS WITH MECHANICAL VENTILATION IN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Abstract

Objective To compare the effect of propofol and midazolam on mechanical ventilation patients in intensive care unit(ICU).Methods A clinical retrospective analysis was carried out in 65 patients,who required mechanical ventilation and sedated by propofol and midazolam.Propfol group was 34 patients,midazolam group was 31 patients.In propofol group,propofol(1.5 mg/kg)was injected intravenously as sedative induction,followed by continuous injection using injecting pump.In midazolam group,midazolam(0.05 mg/kg)was injected intravenously as sedative induction,followed by continuous injection using injecting pump too.The time to get Ramsay sedation level Ⅳ and to be awaken after stopping drug were observed.Prameters of pneusis and circulation before and after giving sedative medicine were compared.Results The onset time to take effect in propofol group was(35.2±8.0)seconds,and(54.0±9.0)seconds in midazolam group,showing significant difference(P0.001).The time to be awaken after stopping drug was(44.2±6.0)minutes in propofol group and(90.0±8.0)minutes in midazolam group(P0.01).Cases that fell asleep again after awakening and nausea stopping drug in propofol group was significantly fewer than that of midazolam group(P0.05).Conclusion The sedation induced by propofol was more effective than that of midazolam,but adverse effect was lower than that of midazolam.
