Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) eradication on reversing chronic gastritis, gastric antrum atrophy and intestinal metaplasia(IM).Methods Patients with H.pylori infection were diagnosed by endoscopy, biopsy specimens obtained for pathology and the states of H.pylori infection.Patients with chronic gastritis, antrum atrophy and IM were recruited and were divided into H.pylori eradicated group and control group(non-eradication).The endoscopic follow-up was carried out in 1 year. The specimens examined for changes of histology were obtained at the same sites. Results The reversing rate of chronic gastritis in H.pylori eradicated group at 1 year(54.52%) was significantly higher than that(19.41%) in the control group(P0.01);and that(15.56%) of antrum atrophy group in H.pylori eradicated group in 1 year was no difference between that in the control group;and no difference was found between the eradicated group and non-eradicated group in patients with IM.Conclusion H.pylori eradication can reverse the chronic gastritis, but cannot reverse the atrophy of gastric mucosa with IM.
