Defining the Essence of Literature: A Zigzag Process of Exploration

Defining the essence of literature is a key issue of literary theories. It undergoes a zigzag process, especially from the perspective of materialism. This paper shows the process of the author's exploration based on his own practice in theory. At the same time, it puts forward the reason why ideology, especially aesthetic ideology, cannot directly be used to define literature.
