Abstract

Through interpreting the connotations of the hexagram Gen (hexagram 52 in the current version of Zhouyi) , this paper expounds its three implications of tranquility, observing, and stillness. Then the paper surveyed the Song Dynasty scholars' explications, succeeding the hermeneutic methods of Yi Zhuan (the Commentaries in Zhouyi), of hexagram Gen and their distinction from Buddhism and the Daoist school. At last, the paper tries, from the angle of phenomenology, to reveal the significance of survival manifested in hexagram Gen.
