Abstract

A new method for the determination of trace amounts of nitrites on the basis of decoloration of indigo was established and reported. The oxidation reaction of indigo with bromate was catalyzed by nitrite in a medium of dilute phosphorus acid solution. Detection limit of the method was 1.3610~(-6)gL~(-1) with a linear range of 0.012~0.08 mgL~(-1) and a recovery of 98.0%~100.8%. The method has been applied to the determination of nitrite in water samples with satisfactory results.
