Spontaneous pneumothorax treated by video assisted thoracoscopic surgery:a report of 96 cases

Abstract

Aim To investigate the clinical application of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for treating spontaneous pneumothorax.Methods 96 cases of spontaneous pneumothorax were treated by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery with pulmonary bulla resection and pleurodesis.Results All cases were cured,no death,no pneumonia,atelectasis and such complication.The operation time was 55 to 240 min,and the mean operation time was 114 min.The mean blood loss during operation was 46 ml.The mean tube drawing time was 3.1 days,while 2 cases was more than 7 days.Hospitalized time after operation was 4 to 14 days,and the mean hospitalized time after operation was 7.5 days.The mean hospitalized time was 11.3 days.No recurrence of pneumothorax was found after 3 to 35 months,mean 15months of follow-up.Conclusion Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for treating spontaneous pneumothorax is safe,little traumatic and has less compilcations.It should be the first choice for treating spontaneous pneumothorax.
