Abstract

By stander effects means the induction of damage in neighboring non-hit cells by signals released from directly-irradiated cells. The mechanisms underlying bystander effects are complex and still not completely understood. In this review we describe different aspects of ionizing radiation-induced bystander effects: types of DNA damage, intercellular signals in bystander effects and bystander effects in vivo.
