Species composition and distribution of algae in Wuquanshan of Lanzhou

Abstract

A variety of aquatic and soil samples were collected from Wuquanshan of Lanzhou in 2002, species diversity, community structure and distribution of algae were studied, and some suggestions on potential application of algae in local ecological re-construction had been given. A total of 65 algal taxa (including 4 varieties) were found, in which diatoms 29, blue-green algae 24, green algae 11 and red alga 1. Forty two species of algae occurred in the aquatic environments, of which diatoms had the largest species diversity (26), then followed by blue-green algae (8), green algae (7) and red alga (1). The first and second dominant species were different in different aquatic habitats. There were 20 species of algae in the topsoil, in which cyanobacteria 13, green algae 4 and diatoms 3. Phormidium africanum and Chlorella vulgaris were respectively the first and the second dominant species. Seven algal taxa distributed in both aquatic and soil environments, and most of them were filamentous cyanobacteria.
