On the Implied Meanings of the Characters and Place Names in Wuthering Heights

Abstract

The names of characters and places in Wuthering Heights are abundant in implied meanings, voicing the intentions of the author. Through analyzing the implied meanings of the characters and place names in this novel, this essay illustrates that the author purposefully failed Heathcliff's revenge. Meanwhile, the theme of this novel-Emily's ultimate concern for the social inequallity-is naturally exposed to the reader.
