Abstract

Objective To observe the protective effects of rhubarb on hepatic fibrosis induced by CCl 4.Methods By using immunohistochemistry, radio immunoassay and ELISA.the changes and relationships among liver histopathology, expression of TGF-β1 in the liver tissue and serum levels of TNF-α,HA,LN,IV-C in hepatic fibrosis induced by CCl 4 were studied before and after treated with rhubarb. Results The score of histological hepatic fibrosis, expression of TGF-β1 in liver tissue and serum levels of TNF-α,TGF-β1,HA,LN,IV-C in rhubarb treated group showed significantly lower than that in control group after treatment respectively(P0.05 or0.01).The serum level of TGF-β1 was positively correlated with those of HA,LN and IV-C.The expression of TGF-β1 in the liver tissue was positively correlated with the staging of fibrotic liver. Conclusion Rhubarb has protective effect on the liver from development of fibrosis and such protective effect may be related to the inhibition the expression of TGF-β1.
