CT and MRI diagnosis of intracerebral cavernous hemangioma

Abstract

Objective To investigate the appearance of CT and MRI in the intracerebral cavernous hemangioma. Methods Thirteen cases of intracerebral cavernous hemangioma confirmed with pathology and the follow-up study were analyzed. Four cases were examined with CT and MRI, 9 cases were examined only with MRI. In all of them, 2 cases with magnetic resonance angiography(MRA) examination and 8 cases with enhanced-MRI examination. Results The lesions of intracerebral cavernous hemangioma could be located in any position of the brain, single lesion was more common. Most lesions had no or slightly edema without mass effect, and had slightly higher density or patchy calcification on CT imaging. The signals of lesions were mixed with ring-like low signal on MRI. Two cases were mildly enhanced and 6 cases had no strengthen enhancement. There weren′t abnormal appearances in MRA. Conclusion The MRI findings of intracerebral cavernous hemangioma are specific, which combined with CT and MRA could make a correct diagnosis.
