Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of the immediate hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on the brain following transient focal cerebral ischemia in rats. Methods Rat models of persistent focal cerebral ischemia were induced by intraluminal filament occlusion to the middle cerebral artery. Seventy healthy Wistar rats were randomly divided into a shame operation group,an ischemia group and a HBO group. Ischemia-onset and the brain tissues were taken out for water content. The mortality of rats was recorded. And the results of each group will be compared. Results HBO group water content of brain was significantly decreased as compared with ischemia group. But the death rate was of no difference between two groups. Conclusion Immediate HBO therapy after ischemia can decrease water content;is has an extraordinary effect on cerebral edema.
