Abstract

AIM To investigate the method and value of barium dynamic imaging of pharynx and esophagus (PEDI) in patients with deglutition disorders (DD). METHODS Videofluoroscopy and spot films in erect lateral and P A positions for pharynx, and supine RAO position for esophagus were undertaken in 851 cases of patients with DD. RESULTS Of 851 cases receiving PEDI, 604 (71%) displayed function or motility disorders: 162 (19%) in pharynx, 247 (29%) in esophagus and 272 (32%) coexisting in both. Sixty eight (8%) displayed structural diseases: 11 (1 3%) in pharynx and 57 (6 7%) in esophagus. Of 68 cases of structural diseases, 66 (7 8%) had complicated functional disorders and 122 (21%) displayed no abnormality. CONCLUSION PEDI is an accurate method for diagnosis of DD.
