Clinical value of ultrasonographic detection of calcification in thyroid nodules

Abstract

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of high-frequency ultrasonography(include 7.5MHz and 11MHz)in identifying different-type calcification in thyroid carcinoma.Methods Seventy patients underwent high-resolution ultrasonography(7.5 MHz or 11 MHz) to detect the calcification in thyroid nodules.Results The detection rate of calcification(microcalcification,coarse calcification or peripheral calcification) was higher in thyroid carcinoma than that in benign nodule(P0.05),especially microcalcification(P0.05).High frequency ultrasound(11 MHz) showed high sensitivity in detecting microcalcification.Conclusion The microcalcification has great value in the differential diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma and benign thyroid nodule.High frequency ultrasonography(11 MHz) can more effectively detect and identify the thyroid microcalcification.
