Qin As a Powerful State in the Spring and Autumn Period

Abstract

Some scholars both in ancient and modern times don't consider Qin as a powerful state in the Spring and Autumn Period.In fact,Qin as a big power was worthy of the name.At that time,Qin had protected the King of Ping's(平王)moving east,ruled the region in Xi Rong(西戎),helped Jin(晋)to seek hegemony,and rescued Chu from jeopardy.In the early period of Eastern Zhou Dynasty,Qin was subinfeudated as a vassal possessing the old haunt of Zhou and thus obtained political and economic advantage.It also has a unique terrain that was easy to defend but hard to attack.This is the reason why Qin turned into one of the powerful states among the four great nations in the Spring and Autumn Period.
