Abstract
A new parameterization method was presented for parametric curve fitting in curve tool path generation of cutter locations. This method uses approximate arc length between two neighborhood points subject to a certain tolerance to parameterize the given series of points. The algorithm was briefly presented, followed by a parametric curve fitting example for a series of cutter locations. The fitted errors were compared with those in conditional approaches. It is shown that the proposed method is simple, robust and more accurate. It has practical advantages in curve fitting of smooth tool path generation for high performance machining of free-form surface.
