Abstract
Objective:To study the changes in occlusal force and masticatory efficiency in asymmetric mandibular prognathism after orthognathic surgery.Methods:Twenty-four patients underwent orthognathic surgery to correct asymmetric mandibular prognathism.Eight patients who underwent Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy(i.e,bimaxillary group) and sixteen patients who underwent only bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy(i.e,single-jaw group) were compared.We used the occlusometer and spectrophotometer to measure the occlusal force and masticatory efficiency preoperatively and 1,3,6 months postoperatively.Results:1-month postoperatively the occlusal force and the masticatory efficiency of the two groups was significantly lower than preoperative status.3-month postoperatively the occlusal force and the masticatory efficiency have been improved.6-month posteoperatively the average occlusal force of the single-jaw group and the mean values of the masticatory efficiency of bimaxillary group have exceeded the preoperative status.Conclusion:Orthognathic surgery can affect the bite force and masticatory efficiency of the patients in a short period of time.With the patients suitable for the new occlusion,the occlusal force and masticatory efficiency can be changed significantly.The occlusal force of the single-jaw group changed fast and the masticatory efficiency of the bimaxillary group changed more obviously.
