Abstract

Unlike the other Ming and Qing painting styles dominated by the literati painting,the mural painting during the Taiping Rebellion period was more focused on social issues and normally be practised by artisans.The Taiping government set up a special department named Xiu Jin Ya to manage the artistic creation and promote artistic forms that people liked.As a result,the mural painting achieved an unprecedented flourish.This paper sketches the vulgarization of mural painting in the Taiping Rebellion and analyzes the three major causes: the vulgarization of artistic subjects,of creating ideas,and of this artistic form itself.
