Abstract
The present syllabus for English majors stresses students' reading speed and the difficulty of reading materials,but overlooks the function of teaching writing through reading and ignores students' acceptance of new words.The reforms in extensive reading course should be made with thoroughly understanding of the aims of reading,using materials with limited number of new words,adopting the approach of time-limited reading dealing with the materials from the perspective of writing to overcome the weaknesses of the syllabus.
