Abstract

Objective To study characteristic eppearances of neuronal migrational anomaly on MRI.Methods The MRI appearances of neuronal migrational anomaly were analyzed retrospectively. Results Of 34 cases ,15 were schizencephaly,22 were gray matter heterotopia,6 were pachygria.MRI characteristic appearances of schizencephaly were gray matter lined clefts which extended the full thickness of cerebral hemispheres from ventricle to hemispheric surface.Enlargement of both ends of clefts which appeared as wedge shape at their lateral ends and as diverticulum from lateral ventricle at their ventricular ends, were noted in our cases.Accompanying lack of septum pellucidum were found in 14 cases.Heterotopias were nodular collections of neurons anomalously located in the periventricular regions.cortical or subcortical areas and white matter. They were isointense to gray matter on all imaging sequences.Pachygyrial gyri were abnormally broad and flat and were accompanied by shallow sulci with thickening of the cortical mantle and a paucity of underlying white matter. Conclusion MRI is the best imaging method for diagnosing neuronal migrational anomaly.
