Abstract
The lower Jinsha River is an area with the highest sediment yield in the upper Yangze basin. Itcovers only 9.27% of the total area of the basin but supplies about 40% of the total sediment recordedat the Yichang Hydrological Station. The present study shows that besides strong slope erosion andwaste discharge from engineering works, debris-flow transport is an important source of the sedimentload in the river. Based on field investigation and measurement, the annual sediment transport intothe lower Jinsha River basin was estimated at 1.54×10 to 67.07×10.
