The Assessment on Comprehensive Strength of Jiangsu Marine Industry Based on Principal Component Analysis

The comprehensive strength of marine industry should be enhanced in the critical implementing period of The Jiangsu Coastal Development Strategy. Firstly, the paper builds marine industry comprehensive strength evaluation index system, in which four principal components(contribution of marine science and technology to the marine industry, capacity of marine industry development, potentials of marine industry development and marine environment protection capacity) are extracted by applying the principal component analysis. Then, several indicators are selected to describe dynamically the marine industry gap between Jiangsu Province and other developed provinces. The research shows that the comprehensive strength of Jiangsu marine industry ranks sixth in 11 coastal areas in mainland China. On the basis of the study, this paper focuses on the analyses of marine industry gaps between Jiangsu Province and other developed provinces. Insufficient technology investment and unreasonable structure of marine industry are the two main drawbacks of Jiangsu marine industry.
