Abstract

Objective To investigate the time, skill and effect of decompressive craniectomy on acute severe traumatic brain injuries. Methods The clinical data of 86 acute traumatic brain injuries patients(30 were in GCS grade 3~5 and 56 in GCS grade 6~12) treated by decompressive craniectomy were analyzed retrospectively. Results 69 patients were treated by unilateral decompressive craniectomy, and 17 patients by bilateral decompressive craniectomy.34 patients were died. While in 52 survived patients, according to the GOS standard,33 with good recovery,8 with moderate disablity,7 with serious disability and 4 were in vegetative state. Conclusion The decompressive craniectomy is an effective, safe and simple technique in patients with acute severe traumatic brain injuries.a
